EASE Users Can Now Accurately Simulate McCauley Line Array Systems

Puyallup, Washington, March 11, 2004 — McCauley Sound announces completion of their EASE 4.0/4.1 .DLL files, which allows EASE users to easily and accurately simulate McCauley Sound's MONARC™, IN.LINE™ and M.LINE™ line array systems. Essentially a "plug-in" that is dynamically loaded upon request, McCauley Sound’s .DLL files operate in conjunction with EASE, enabling designers to easily place and configure complex line array systems within the EASE acoustic modeling environment, providing controls to set and edit parameters for aim, distance and frequency. McCauley Sound developed the .DLLs in order to make their line array systems readily available to designers who model in EASE, taking full advantage of the numerous line-array related improvements recently implemented in the software.
While EASE 4.0 / 4.1 sports several new enhancements that facilitate line array simulation, .DLL support is arguably the most important. "Before the introduction of .DLL support, line arrays had to be modeled by placing individual speakers in a venue, repeatedly copying speakers and parameters, and manually setting and resetting their positions in relationship to each other," explains McCauley Sound's Lead Software Developer, Ian Smith. "As tedious and time-consuming as that process was, the software was still not considering the true summation effect of line array, so the pre-.dll simulations were far from accurate.”
By implementing a robust graphical user interface, McCauley Sound, Inc.’s .DLLs provide the designer a simple-to-use and easy-to-understand way of creating highly complex arrays. Ian Smith continues, “Now the user can focus solely on his design, while the McCauley .DLL does all the ‘heavy lifting’ of communicating the user’s array configuration, cell geometry, splay angles, etc., along with all of our proprietary line array summation mathematics and measurement data, to the EASE acoustic simulation engine. This gives designers an easy and highly intuitive method of designing and placing sophisticated arrays… with far more accuracy with regards to the results."
As people have now come to expect from the McCauley engineering team, the development of .DLLs was far from typical. "(Tom) McCauley took a significantly different approach to our .DLL development process." says Scott Holden, Senior Applications Engineer at McCauley Sound, "Rather than build on a purely mathematical and theoretical model of our line array’s acoustic behavior, we went the extra step of actually measuring and including real response data. To achieve this, the McCauley team invested nearly a year in the development process, split roughly equally between data collection, coding and compilation of the .DLLs. No less than 2,600 measurements were taken of each line array system from various angles; each measurement covering 270 frequency bands. The measurements were then repeated and double checked against EASE’s simulations in both “laboratory” and “real-world” environments to ensure the accuracy of both the data and McCauley’s summation calculations. McCauley Sound’s efforts paid off, resulting in extremely accurate .DLLs that not only delivers highly reliable simulations, but also offer attractive side benefits, including a more transparent user interface featuring real-time graphic rendering of the line array configuration during input and editing. "With all the other line array .DLLs we've seen," Mr. Smith expounds, "you have to actually exit the edit mode to see what you've put together… which can be frustrating. Having the array graphically represented and updated in real-time through the .DLL’s user-interface is a feature that definitely raises the bar.”

The new .DLLs also further improve the efficiency of McCauley Sound's System Design Group (SDG), a free factory design and support service which leverages McCauley Sound’s in-house engineering expertise for the benefit of McCauley’s contractor and consultant partners. Working off simple paper or electronic blueprints, the SDG can model and / or convert these plans into an EASE 4.0 / 4.1’s acoustic simulation, providing McCauley’s design and build partners with an invisible ally in the modeling, design and specification process.
